Justice For All Dog Attacks
The issue
As of lately there has been an unfortunate large number of dog attacks in the Wellard and Kwinana area. This is happening due to owners not keeping their dogs on a lead in childrens playgrounds and other areas. As the number rises it is starting to concern a lot of dog owners. Owners are not wanting to walk their dogs due to the fear of an unprovoked dog attack to their beloved pet or children. We are asking for the Kwinana Council to recognize this issue and to act on it. We would like to ask for all childrens playgrounds in the area to have a sign stating that dogs must be kept on leads and to have a much bigger penalty than already exists. We feel with a harsher penalty, owners may be more inclined to keep their dogs on a lead.
Unfortunately we have had to experience our own unprovoked dog attack to our beautiful boy, Tron. Tron went on his morning walk around the playground, ON HIS LEAD with his owners. Another dog was in the playground with his owner but was NOT on his lead. This dog saw Tron and ran straight at him. The other owner was trying to shout for him to come back, but this dog did not obey. The dog has ran at Tron, jumped up and latched onto the back of his neck. The dog had locked his jaw onto Tron so the dog could not be removed. Tron ended up with a substantial amount of injures which required immediate surgery. Luckily Tron is a larger dog. If this had happened to a smaller dog, the dog could have been killed.
The Ranger has stated that she believes the Kwinana Council will say it will cost too much money to place signs around childrens play areas. How about these poor owners that are having to pay thousands of dollars to keep their beloved pet alive after a vicious dog attack? Kwinana Council should have a duty of care to all families and all beloved pets in these families.
