BITSians Against The Falling Cutoffs

The Issue

Birla Institute of Technology and Science is a renowned institute, globally recognized for the outstanding talent it has consistently produced. We are all aware of the rigorous entrance exam that one has to go through before receiving the prestigious offer letter.

But of late, we have seen a sharp and worrying decline in the admission cutoff trends of the entrance exam BITSAT. At the sight of some cutoffs one can't help but think of the futility and meaninglessness of having held an entrance exam for admissions in the first place.

Since the inception of this drop, it has constantly been argued that the quality of intellect enrolling in the institute has been on a decline. It has also been argued that a single performance on BITSAT is not enough to label a student's intellect or their talent.

The cause of this downward trend could be attested to the institute's rising fee demand from it's students making it look like the institute has embraced a culture of corporate greed in its administration and its vision.

The purpose of this petition is to open a dialogue between the student bodies, the administration and the alumini to see to it that BITS Pilani does not only remain as a tool for the elite and the rich population to maintain its status quo, but also stand to be remembered as an institute of empowerment by providing affordable education to the most destitute, needy but worthy.

I will list some of the issues and suggestions that could help in altering the course of direction BITS is taking.

   1) Scraping MCN:- A significant proportion of revenue is lost on students availing fake MCNs. Instead a better direction for those funds would be by enrolling students coming from financially less privileged backgrounds with better bitsat scores at a lower first cost and fees. Profiling the financial capabilities of students at the screening would cost less as well as ensure the scholarship funds reach the students who need them the most.

   2) Pre Determine the Lowest Cutoffs:- A pre announced lowest cutoff would encourage more students to fill the admission form than an uncertain number. This would also help BITS maintain the integrity and dignity of its cutoffs. If the available seats still aren't exhausted, I would recommend a more holistic approach for admission of an applicant with lower marks than the announced cutoffs. The institute could use sports merit, interviews and proficiency in various other extra curricular activities to create an environment of achievers from non academic backgrounds.
