Slow down! Install wildlife signs in Lindfield to warn motorists and promote awareness
The Issue
I have recently seen yet another beautiful swamp wallaby (also known as a black pademelon) that had been hit by a car and killed on Lady Game Drive, Killara. This is the second wallaby I have seen killed by a car this year. I have also seen a short-beaked echidna that was hit on the same stretch of road.
After having my request to install signs, warning drivers that there is wildlife in the area, repeatedly rejected by council I am now reaching out to our lovely local community for support. If you too would like to see wildlife signs placed adjacent to bushland along Lady Game Drive and Bradfield Road please sign this petition and show Ku-ring-gai Council that you care.
What to do if you come across a wallaby that has been hit by a vehicle and is laying on the road.
- Take care of your safety first and park somewhere safe.
- Approach the wallaby and check if it has a pouch – this is located on the lower stomach between its legs. There may be an orphan baby wallaby alive inside.
- Carefully open the pouch. If there is a baby wallaby inside, cup your hands under the baby (if they are not attached to a teat) and place the baby into a ‘pouch’ – this could be your shirt, a cotton bag, etc. Hold the baby close to you for warmth and heartbeat.
- Drag the dead wallaby by the tail at least 10 metres off the road.
- Take the baby wallaby to the nearest vet or contact Sydney Wildlife (who have their headquarters in Lane Cove National Park) on 02 9413 4300
