Keep the Murphy Hall Hawk Stop/JayBreak Open and save Patty!

Keep the Murphy Hall Hawk Stop/JayBreak Open and save Patty!
The Issue
KU Music students are different than many other KU students. We take 17+ credit hours and are in Murphy Hall from 7:30 AM until at least 5PM. We often go back to back to back with classes, lessons, and practicing. Usually, we have ten minutes or less to eat. This is where our Hawk Stop comes in (or JayBreak, depending on what you learned first). At the Murphy Hall Hawk Stop, we are able to grab our lunch quickly, have conversations with students and professors, and get a sense of home within Murphy.
One person who sticks out in the Hawk Stop is the cashier, Patty. Patty is like a mother to many of us. She listens to our problems. She is always there with a smile and a "How are you honey?" Personally, she has kept me calm and smiling when I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. She truly cares about the inhabitants of Murphy.
In the past few weeks, many students have found out that the Murphy Hall Hawk Stop is closing at the end of the semester. Instead, we are told that we can use the "state of the art facilities" in the Engineering Complex and DeBruce Center. The DeBruce Center is not expected to be completed until late Spring 2016. By removing the Hawk Stop in Murphy, life becomes more complicated for students. Students will now have to trek through the Engineering Complex (much of which is outdoors) with their instruments in 10 minutes or less. Traffic in the Engineering Complex would greaten, creating longer lines. These lines prevent music majors from getting lunch. Business to KU Dining from the School of Music/Theatre Department would decline, since many students would not be able to purchase the salads or premade crunchy chicken cheddar wraps that are available in Murphy. Also, Patty would be moved. She is an integral part of making Murphy Hall a more inviting environment. She is mentioned during KU Music Auditions as someone you should meet within your first few days of classes as a music Jayhawk. Patty would be moved to a place where she is unable to create the relationships with students. She would also deal with grumpier students, compared to the music students who know not to be mean to Patty.
In short, the KU Music students do not support the removal of the Hawk Stop. It is inconvenient to the students in the Music/Theatre department, it will lead to bad business for KU dining due to the lack of revenue that the Murphy Stop creates. And most importantly, it removes a woman who cares about her job AND her clients from a place that she has loved and she is loved in.
