Shelly Cabezas started this petition to Kroger Grocery and

The Kroger at 3300 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77006 is shutting down January 2021. This Kroger is a landmark in the Montrose area and is best known as the Disco Kroger. This Kroger got its nickname because the late-night crowds that would come in after the bars were close (when it was 24hr) and because it is located in the heart of Montrose, drag queens and people in costumes could often be seen there. This location has been in operation for 42 years.

What makes this Kroger location so great is that is a smaller store than the stores in the surrounding area. Although it is a small store, it always has a great selection of products and it is easy for customers to navigate the store.

The Montrose Kroger is important to the area because many people walk and bike to this location. In fact, the Montrose Kroger serves other areas like Midtown, Downtown, South Central Houston and the Museum District. If this location is closed, it will create a food desert (*1) for many people in the surrounding areas. The Fiesta (grocery store) in this area was closed and if this Kroger closes, more than 500 people will not live within 1 mile of the nearest grocery store. Montrose currently has a population density of 8,689 (*2) people per a square mile and has about 35,723 (*2) people currently livening within this one community. Additionally, the areas is still growing with several high rise apartments and condo buildings under construction. Where will these additional people and families shop if the closest grocery store is over a mile away? We need the Montrose Kroger to remain open to meet the community’s growing need.

For the people who depend on walking/biking to this location, it will be difficult for them to shop for the essential groceries they need. For example, the nearest grocery stores in the area are over a 20 minute walk or will require multiple bus transfers.
·      From the 3300 Montrose location to the nearest Kroger (1938 W Gray St), it is a ~29 min walk, or it will take two bus transfers to get to this location.
·      From the 3300 Montrose location to the nearest HEB (1701 W Alabama), it is a ~21 min walk, or it will take a person one bus ride with an additional ~ 11 min walk to get to this location.
·      From the 3300 Montrose location to the nearest Randalls (2225 Louisiana St), it is a ~28 min walk, or it will take a person one bus ride and a ~3 min walk to get to this location.
Although Whole Foods (515 Elgin St) is the closest grocery store to the 330 Montrose Kroger, it is more of a specialty grocery store, where many common brands cannot be found and traditionally has a higher priced goods offered.  If someone is on a limited income, they could not easily shop there.
