Formal Request for Intervention and Oversight in the Case of Kristen Lynn Phillbrick
Those who love Kristen we all stand an request that the York County Sheriff’s Office and the York County District Attorney’s Office intervene and take over the investigation and reconsider the cause of death into the tragic death of Kristen Lynn Phillbrick, which occurred on April 9th, 2025, and was hastily ruled a suicide by the Biddeford Police Department.
As a domestic violence survivor and advocate for victims’ voices to be heard, I am deeply concerned by the alarming number of red flags that were disregarded in this case. I have compiled a petition outlining substantial evidence and testimony that was either overlooked or dismissed. These include documented threats by Text and verbal made by Kristen’s spouse even when clear indicators of her plan to leave the abusive relationship, and witness statements from loved ones who were never interviewed.
Despite Kristen showing hope, happiness, and preparation for a new chapter in life, none of these factors were taken into account. The Biddeford Police Department we feel failed to conduct a full investigation and refused to pursue leads that directly pointed to potential foul play and coercion. Kristen’s voice—and the voices of those who cared about her—were silenced.
In the state of Maine, if a spouse bullies or coerces or his or hers spouse to the point where they takes are threatened to take their own life, they can face serious criminal charges. The specific charge depends on the nature and extent of their actions.
I am formally requesting:
1. That the York County Sheriff’s Office take over the investigation into Kristen’s death.
2. That the York County District Attorney’s Office re-examines the evidence and considers potential criminal charges under Maine laws, including but not limited to murder, manslaughter, or aiding and abetting suicide.
As outlined in my attached petition, there are multiple legal grounds for this case to be reopened, including Maine statutes involving domestic abuse, coercion, and criminal negligence leading to death.
Kristen deserved protection. She deserved to be heard. If we ignore these signs, we send a message to every victim that their truth does not matter. I believe the York County justice system can correct what was mishandled.
I thank you for your time, and I plead with you to take this request seriously—not only for Kristen and her family, but for every survivor who is still trying to break the cycle of abuse. If you can list all the things that happened to you in your life and you somehow made it past all of that to be in a position where you can still go make something happen and help others in a positive way like I am —that’s what each of us have in common with every hero of every story of every autobiography: that no matter how much has happened to you that should’ve broken you, that did not break you, and through the violence, you found peace—that is a testimony itself. My children and I made it out but we are still fighting for protection against our abuser while clear evidence has been provided to the courts, standing alone still scared but stronger. Kristen unfortunately didn’t make it out. So I hope by reading this, you choose to help others who have truly been silenced—even when they find their voice.
This letter is not just a request an testimony it is a movement for every child, every Parent every man or women that has been forced to remain silent who is trying to be brave in a world that too often tells them to be quiet. I hope that by sharing this, you will see not only the pain we've endured, but the strength it took to survive it- and the change we can create. I hope by ready this you choose to help others who have truly been silenced- even when they found their voice.
Sincerely,
A Survivor for change
For 11 years, my boys and I endured physical, mental, and financial abuse. It wasn’t until I found peace through the violence that I had the strength to say, “enough.” I was lucky to make it out the other side—but even with undeniable proof and an overwhelming amount of evidence, my abuser continues to control, manipulate, and weaponize the system against us.
Even when our boys bravely told the truth, it was dismissed. Kristen’s story hits painfully close to home. I have been physically attacked in-front of my two boys and told to stay silent when police arrive and if I spoke up he would make sure no one would believe me. my boys have been physically attacked screamed at an that was justified as parent discipline. Watching your abuser statements unfold is more terrifying when there is evidence as videos, pictures, declarations from witnesses but yet it gets ignored or overlooked. This cycle must end. No more lives should be lost when there are years of evidence supporting a victim’s claims. Even when a victim has spoke about the abuses to loved ones and and friends That evidence must be taken seriously and prioritized.
I understand that some people have abused the system, making it harder for true survivors like Kristen and me to have our voice heard. Justice must focus on the present danger—not on someone’s past—as a reason to ignore real, ongoing abuse.
How many more lives will be lost to domestic violence? How many more family’s have to suffer? How many more victims have to fight alone when we are screaming for protection but it’s ignored? When will children’s, friends and victims family’s be heard? When facts are ignored or the illusion of what happens is the maine focus instead of fully investigate every aspect and details you fail us all.. when will the Image of an abuser end over the safety and healing of children, family, friends and victims?
Subject: The Ripple Effects of Coerced Suicide in Domestic Violence Cases and Legal Failures
Domestic violence often extends far beyond the immediate victim, and when it escalates to coerced suicide—particularly through force, duress, or deception—it becomes a deeply traumatic event for the victim’s children, grandchildren, family, and community. Under Maine law, if a person intentionally or knowingly causes another person to commit suicide through such means, it is considered murder. If the individual’s actions were reckless or criminally negligent, it may constitute manslaughter. If they encouraged or assisted in the suicide, they can be charged under the statute for aiding or soliciting suicide.
When these cases are ruled incorrectly—often as simple suicides—and law enforcement fails to investigate properly, the impact is devastating and far-reaching.
Psychological Impact on Children and Grandchildren:
- Children who lose a parent to coerced suicide often suffer from severe emotional trauma, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They may struggle with feelings of abandonment, guilt, and confusion, especially if they witnessed abuse or were aware of it.
- Grandchildren, particularly those close to the victim, may carry the emotional weight of the family’s unresolved grief, often without fully understanding the circumstances.
- A misclassification of death undermines the sense of justice and closure necessary for healing, and can perpetuate cycles of trauma and silence in future generations.
Impact on Family and Friends:
- Families often experience deep emotional anguish, especially when they possess clear evidence or personal testimony indicating the death was not a voluntary act but the result of prolonged abuse and coercion.
- Friends and loved ones may suffer survivor’s guilt or frustration from being ignored or dismissed by authorities despite offering critical information.
- Misinformation in the legal record can tarnish the victim’s memory and deny the family their right to truth and justice.
Social and Legal Consequences:
- A failure to recognize and prosecute coercive suicides sends a dangerous message that abusers can avoid accountability through psychological manipulation.
- Communities lose faith in law enforcement and judicial institutions when they feel the truth is being hidden or overlooked.
- Legal inaction can discourage other victims of domestic violence from coming forward, fearing that even in death, their abuser will remain protected by silence or systemic failure.
Conclusion:
Families who know the truth and have evidence are often retraumatized by a justice system that fails to act. The emotional, psychological, and social consequences of coerced suicide extend well beyond the moment of death. For the sake of justice, healing, and prevention, it is essential that law enforcement and prosecutors treat such cases with the gravity they deserve. Revisiting these cases, correcting the record, and holding abusers accountable is not just a legal duty—it is a moral imperative.
