Kratom Ban

Kratom Ban
The Issue
PETITION TO PROHIBIT KRATOM IN ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FLORIDA
We, the undersigned residents of St. Johns County and concerned members of the public, urge the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners to pass an ordinance prohibiting the sale, possession, and distribution of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) within county limits.
Why Kratom Should Be Prohibited:
Addictive and Dangerous: Kratom is a psychoactive substance with opioid-like effects. Studies confirm that it acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, leading to dependency, withdrawal symptoms, and compulsive use.
Adverse Health Effects: Kratom use has been linked to respiratory depression, seizures, liver toxicity, and psychiatric disturbances, including psychosis and suicidal ideation.
Overdose Deaths: The FDA and CDC have documented hundreds of kratom-related deaths, many involving no other substances. Florida’s own medical examiner reports have confirmed fatalities directly attributed to kratom toxicity.
No Proven Medical Use: The FDA has not approved kratom for any therapeutic purpose. Claims that it is a safe herbal remedy are unsupported by rigorous science and dangerously misleading.
Youth Access & Retail Exploitation: Kratom is sold at gas stations, vape shops, and convenience stores—often without age restrictions—making it easily accessible to minors and vulnerable populations.
Our Request:
We respectfully petition the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners to:
Enact a local ordinance classifying kratom as a Schedule I substance under county law;
Ban the sale, possession, marketing, and distribution of kratom in all forms (including extracts, powders, capsules, and beverages);
Coordinate with local law enforcement and public health agencies to ensure public awareness and enforcement of the ban;
Pass a companion advocacy resolution urging the Florida Legislature and U.S. Congress to take immediate action toward statewide and national prohibition of kratom.
