2020 has shown us all just how resilient, yet fragile, our youth can be. In a world full of political extremes, riots and a global pandemic, our children need as much support as possible. Schools not only provide a source of education and routine, but nurturing, care and compassion. From the teachers to the administration to the support staff to the School Resource Officers (SRO's), safety has become their number one priority. And yet, here we are, 2020, post Columbine, post Sandy Hook, post Marjory Douglas, having to fight to keep our SRO's in the schools due to a push from a local group seeking to remove them all in the name of social justice.

Our kids are not pawns to be gambled with.

An SRO's primary duty, according to the NYS School Board's definition, is to protect the school's environment and to maintain an atmosphere where students, teachers and staff feel safe. An SRO must be an accredited police officer in good standing (police academy training is minimally 649 training hours) and then receives additional training from The Criminal Justice Services Youth Service Training Department. This training includes academic organizational structure, counseling, handling specials needs students, school violence, gang activity, crisis management, and creating drug free schools.

According to KCSD's own FB page entry on May 1, 2018: In Kingston, an SRO participates in peer mediation for conflict resolution, provides safety instruction for students and parents, conferences with school staff to assist regarding law enforcement and crime issues, attendance at all necessary meeting, liaisons with community organizations and agencies that assist youth and families, helps develop safety plans and strategies to prevent and minimize dangerous situations in schools, maintains a vigilant eye and ear in the community as a preventive measure, responds to emergencies in the schools, and initiates law enforcement action if necessary. An SRO is not a school disciplinarian. They are not involved in disciplinary actions that do not constitute violations of the law.

Former City of Kingston School Board of Education Trustee, Jean Jacobs, worked tirelessly alongside former Governor George Pataki to create the roles and policies for SRO's.

If you agree that it is in the best interest of our children, their teachers and staff for the SRO's to continue their important work in our local schools, please join me in having your voice heard and let the BOE members know that we are not willing to gamble the safety of our children.
