Save the Scott Adams Memorial Skatepark!! (Cloud Park)
The Issue
City Leaders of Kingsport and Domtar plan to destroy Cloud Park and Scott Adams Memorial Skatepark to make way for Domtar's newest loading facility--At a time of economic uncertainty that is only amplified by the covid-19 virus, and as out door spaces are utilized by people more than ever -- The city voted to demolish our only skatepark without providing a public detailed plan or timeline for the parks replacement despite announcing to do so in local news media and online. This will not only adversely effect the residents of Sevier Terrace as Domtar's expansion will increase truck traffic in the neighborhood and eliminate their only park within walking distance but it will effect all action sports enthusiasts in our city who frequent the skatepark daily. Without a detailed timeline for construction, or transparent information about security of funds to do so - Kingsport City leaders are putting our city at risk of losing its only action sports ramp park!!!
Hundreds of people currently use the park every week and this is the only skatepark we have.
We ask you to sign this petition to help us motivate the city to secure our cities only skate park! Thank you all!
What we want:
Because the city has currently failed to provide a detailed timeline for reconstruction, or transparency for funding of the project:
- The Scott Adams Memorial Skatepark should be preserved
Additionally, we want a detailed plan for a timely reconstruction if the above can not be accomplished-- we must have new park construction well underway before demolition is even approached. We want transparency about secured funds for the project and those funds be locked to build a park of equal or greater land size. And finally, if these conditions are not met, we want to SAVE THE SCOTT ADAMS MEMORIAL SKATEPARK and CLOUD PARK for our citizens.
As of 09/21/20 , the city has not release a timeline or funding information. Despite calls for community involvement in design prospects.
The Back Story:
Over 15 years ago a child, Scott Adams, was retrieving his skateboard from a busy roadway when he was struck by a car and killed. For almost a decade prior to his death numerous citizens of Kingsport campaigned for a skate park but ultimately Scott's passing was the key event that finally motivated action for ground breaking. The momentum leading up to the construction of the park was largely establish by high school students speaking at city meetings and raising funds, organizations such as Kingsport Tomorrow, and a grant provided by the Tony Hawk Foundation.
Today, Domtar is a the primary catalyst for the parks scheduled destruction. Domtar response to downturns in our economy, the largest being the national demand shortage brought about by covid-19, led the City of Kingsport to strike a deal with Domtar to retain jobs in exchange for other undeveloped lands-- at a loss of Cloud Park and the skatepark. With very little public notice, It was agreed that Kingsport would give Domtar the land that is Cloud Park to make way for a loading facility and expansion area for a newer paper product. But ultimately this expansion will lead to the destruction of Cloud Park, the skatepark, and increased industrialization and shipping truck traffic inside the Seveir Terrace neighborhood at around the green belt.
