Allow police involvement in animal cruelty cases

Recently I discovered that police involvement is prohibited in animal cruelty situations within King County. Not allowing our police to get involved in a legal matter made no sense to me. If abusing an animal is illegal, then why can't the police be involved in the situation, to help save the animal, and bring justice to where it is needed?

My husband and I recently found a dog wandering our neighborhood and brought her in for the night. She had scars on her face, you could see the outline of her ribs and spine; she was afraid of men, and had severe separation anxiety. I knew who she belonged to, but I couldn't imagine what would happen to her again if I gave her back, so I called King County Regional Animal Services. I had 2 ongoing cases with them, one for barking, and one for cruelty regarding the dog.

In the morning, an animal control officer from their office came to pick her up. He advised me that the owner would not be able to get her back unless he paid a fine for licensing, and if there were any veterinary fees, he'd also need to pay those. Several hours later the owner comes home and I hear the dog immediately bark when she got outside, and then yelling, cussing, and thumping, as well as yelping and whimpering.

Some people may look at a dog, and assume it deserves whatever punishment it receives, saying it's none of our business what happens to someone else's pet. When I took her in that night, she didn't bark, she didn't growl or go potty in the house, she didn't beg, she didn't jump on furniture, or become overly hyper. She sat next to me, and panted: She was scared.

After a few hours of me petting her, giving her dinner, water, some warmth and a blanket she finally fell asleep. From that moment on, I instantly loved her and she never, not once, left my side. She is a good dog who deserves a second chance; a chance to have a new life with a family who won't keep her locked outside with very little to no shelter, no heat in the snow, ice, and wind storms.

I hope that you feel driven to speak up for the voiceless animals in our county just as I do. They need our help, and we need a change in the laws of animal cruelty. Thank you for signing this petition. After we reach a large amount of signatures, I'll be requesting a meeting with our congressman, Dave Reichert to discuss creating a new bill that would require the aid of police with animal cruelty.
