The Issue

Tyrone Daniels, who had just turned 20, was at home by himself asleep on a June afternoon in 1991 when the Chicago police came to his front door with their guns drawn. A man, Edward McComb, had been killed right down the street only moments ago, and some of McComb’s family and friends said that Tyrone was involved.

Tyrone was ushered out of his home and into an awaiting police car, which drove him to the Area 1 51st and Wentworth police station, where he was led to an interrogation room and handcuffed to a wall. Detective James Cassidy then began to question him about the murder of McComb, during which Tyrone vehemently maintained his innocence.

Detective Cassidy wanted Tyrone to confess to a crime he didn't commit, a crime he knew nothing about. Weeks later, codefendant Oily Thomas was arrested for the same crime, a crime he has always maintained he didn't commit either.

Now, the question must be asked: why would Detective Cassidy frame Tyrone and Oily?

The answer is plain and simple. Detective Cassidy has a long and extensive history of framing innocent Black and Latino defendants based on false confessions and manufactured evidence. In Tyrone's case, manufactured false eyewitness testimony was presented about how McComb was killed, unscientific gunshot residue testing methods results were presented as scientific evidence, and the false claim was made that a hat found at the scene of the crime belonged to codefendant Thomas.

The facts : Medical Examiner / Pathologist Dr. Robert H. Kirschner, M.D. examined McComb's body, and his autopsy report and testimony directly contradicts the testimony of Cassidy's so - called eyewitnesses about how McComb was killed. The method used by Lab analyst Bob Berk to determine gunshot residue has been scientifically proven to be unreliable. And though Thomas has moved to have the hat allegedly belonging to him DNA tested, the State has failed to do so.

After thirty years, Tyrone is still incarcerated for a crime he did not commit. He is still unjustly paying the price for Detective Cassidy's racism and abuse of power. He deserves to be exonerated NOW. Sign this petition to urge Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx to have the Conviction Integrity Unit in her office reinvestigate Tyrone's case based on being wrongfully convicted, with the Illinois Innocence Project facilitating that reinvestigation.
