Kik deactivation - Human Rights. Don't allow social media to control you.
The Issue
Despite all the joy and conveniences we get from using social media some people do not cease to realize what is happening with social media staff teams. Whether, You are a 16 year old snapchatting your friends everyday, a 12 year old loving his Xbox or even a 60 year old checking his or her emails, you, me, and a lot of people around you are at risk from tyrannical staff members of these social media applications we love to use.
This doesn't happen to a lot of people right? So why should I care?
Twitter published a blog post saying that since mid-2015 it suspended 125,000 accounts for “threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.” Yet, a large number of those suspended people weren't in isis. They were in actuality actively trying to stop people of terrorist groups.
A statement from one of these people, an anti-terrorist hacker with the hacker collective Anonymous, said: “You do realise if we all stopped reporting terrorist accounts and graphic images, Twitter would be flooded with terrorists."
After the announcement by Twitter angered Anonymous members revealed they have had their accounts banned - not ISIS.
In February 15 hackers had their accounts shut down on Twitter, despite months of finding and reporting jihadis.
Their supporters complained to Twitter in their droves and their accounts were reactivated within two hours. Now despite all the terrible things Twitter did to those people, they at least reactivated the member's accounts. Unlike another social media site, known as kik; On June 8th, around 11:14AM, They shut down nearly 20 accounts. When their friends became clearly distressed they emailed kik over and over again. A staff member with the name of Meliassa, emailed them all with the simple message of, "Thanks for your message. When we receive reports about a Kik account, our team investigates further and takes action as appropriate.
If an account has violated our Terms of Service (http://www.kik.com/terms/ we may deactivate the account." Yet with further research the only reason to report an account is as spam.
Tracking down some of the contacts of the banned accounts, nearly all of them said they have never spammed in their life. They banned a certain group of people whom were in a yaoi chat. If you do not know what yaoi is, it is basically a romance anime except with two boys instead of one girl and one boy. You would expect me to play the homophobia card, but that's not how I view this.
According to a source it all started when a random user joined the chat and was given administration of the chat. That's when a separate person with administration went crazy, then removing everyone who didn't have adminship. The new admin then added her good friends then gave them administration. The other girl added a bunch of pedophiles and proclaimed hackers. So people were joining to send very grapic images and child porn. But instead of banning 'those' accounts, Kik shut down the bystanders who never even said a thing. Just silently watched in disgust. What should kik do about this? What should social media applications staff members do about this? Well they should dive further into the manner of when they suddenly shut down accounts.
For instance, it would bring great responsibility and maturity to the reputation of kik, Facebook, twitter, and so on, if they emailed or texted the user, saying that they have violated one or many of the rules and terms of services, and that they have one or however many strikes on the account. And if a user does not listen and continues to receive strikes, then when that account receives a certain amount of strikes, then and only then will those social media teams have the right to shut down that account. And I understand that some people might be doing something illegal and if it does reach that point where it may result in terrorism and or anything that would result in a felony, then of course those social media teams should have every right to take action immediately. But I'm 110% positive that the accounts related to the June 8th incident, did nothing that would result in terrorism or felonies.
Well, I imagine that you must've been really breaking their terms and services. Well in actuality, a man who went by the name, 'ThePro', This man worked for Microsoft and he abused his power completely, that man had a nephew who loved to use Xbox, so his nephew would go on Xbox, legitimately in my opinion he only used Xbox to instigate, how this tyrannical moderator came to be known is because a man who had some type of following on YouTube came across this moderator, you can see the original video at, https://youtu.be/QPa1JwktvF this moderator does not work with Microsoft any longer, for obvious reasons. This merely goes to show that there are very oppressive staff members of these teams.
I have had one personal experience with my account being deactivated, after hours and hours of asking, they notified me that I had violated their terms and services and that my account was rightfully deactivated. They did it, without any justification or reasoning not to mention lack of evidence of such claims. I had friends and family around the world that I will never get back. This happens more than you think, you could be next, sign this petition and put an end to it.
