The Issue
As we all know Kiena Dawes took her life after years of abuse by the hands of RYAN WELLINGS. He was recently charged and has been sentenced to 6 years however will probably be out in 3.
Apparently due to Miss Dawes mental health and previous suicide attempts the judge clearly took this is to consideration along with Miss Dawes decision too sadly take her life at a nearby train track.
Mr WELLINGS was not sentenced for manslaughter even though he was the reason why Miss Dawes felt she couldn’t cope to live any longer, leaving by her daughter behind. Miss Dawes wrote a statement to state it was his fault and why and this seems to have been disregarded, even though with the statement, previous hospital trips for injuries caused by the hands of Mr Wellings and any phone calls or welfare checks to Lancashire police is enough evidence for manslaughter.
Wellings was only sentenced to his behaviour towards Miss Dawes and nothing else. The sentence is appalling. A lady lost her life and a child lost both her parents. Miss Dawes, her daughter and her family members and friends have not got justice for the sentence that Mr Wellings received and I think it should be appealed and re trialed for manslaughter.
There are so many DV cases around the world that do not get justice, don’t get security and safety to know that person can’t hurt them again. And someone don’t get to live either by being killed by their abusers or them using suicide to get out. The abusers are not put behind bars for long and they are free to find another victim. While these victims are left with life changing side effects daily.
This case should have been manslaughter and should not have been anything less due to Miss Dawes previous mental health and suicide attempts prior to the relationship. Why? Because this just gave all DV abusers the right that they can torment their victims so much that they may use suicide as an option and the abusers will get either nothing or 6 years of the victim has previous mental health or has attempted suicide prior to their relationship.
Things need to change not just for Miss Dawes but for all DV VICTIMS.
I opt for “ KIENA’S LAW “ which puts all DV abusers behind bars for a life sentence if their victim takes their own life regardless of any mental health conditions and previous suicide attempts.
