Industrial Composter Construction in Malaysia
The Issue
Bioplastic commonly made from Polylactic acid (PLA) though it is bio-based plastic but it is not biodegradable like kitchen waste.
Because PLA is synthetically made polymer so technically there is no any microbes or bacteria in nature that can consume PLA. There is no living organisms involved in PLA degradation.
PLA can only be broken down to CO2 and water under specific conditions of industrial composting or recycling facilities.
Temperature required ranged between 55-70C, retention time approximately 90days under controlled humidity. If PLA waste is not properly managed, its behaviour is the same like any other conventional plastic bag, which will never degrade, or perhaps one day further break down into microplastic.
Problem in Malaysia is we don't have industrial composter at all, not to mention composting facilities that can process PLA plastic. Without a proper facilties, all bioplastic/PLA plastic produced are all ending up in land fill, making plastic pollution worse than it already is.
We urge government to invest in a centralized industrial composter that can process PLA plastic, to prevent the GO GREEN effort going to waste.
