Require UNC-CH professors to regularly update grades

The Issue

Academic transparency should be the #1 priority at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Part of academic transparency includes keeping students updated with their current standing in courses. As students at this university, we hold ourselves to a high academic standard. It is extremely difficult for a student to understand where they stand in a course academically without being informed of their overall grade in the class.

Many professors do not regularly update the Sakai page grade book with individual grades. This makes it even more difficult for students to personally calculate their grades. Also, students in the Fall 2020 semester struggled to determine whether they should consider the pass/fail options in their courses due to a lack of knowledge of their current grades.

We call on Chancellor Kevin Guskiewickz as well as the other administrative bodies at UNC-CH to require professors to regularly update overall grades in Sakai to provide academic transparency for students here at UNC. This requirement will allow students to see their progress in their classes and determine whether they are practicing effective study habits that will result in overall academic success.

We pride ourselves in being Tarheels. We have full faith in UNC's willingness to take our serious concerns into consideration.
