HOLLYWOOD DON'T MAKE ANOTHER TARZAN MOVIE EVER!

The Issue

Whether it's the 1930s Tarzan of Johnny Weissmuller , the 1950s Gordon Scott the 21st century version of Alexander Skarsgard and his Black sidekick Samuel L. Jackson (added to inoculate the filmmakers from accusations of racism) Tarzan doesn't pass the smell test.

It may make a whole load of money but the world shouldn't evolve only around money.

Tarzan was created in 1912 when all of Africa except Ethiopia and Liberia was controlled by European powers. The depiction of Africans as frightened primitives was meant to demonize them and rationalize colonial conquest, exploitation, and rule.

Even without the political history of African colonization and negative African depictions just imagine the logic behind the character Tarzan -- That a White man is born in Africa and masters the African environment including the animals even more so than Africans themselves.

And in "The Legend of Tarzan" the White hero leaves Europe and goes back to Africa to save Congolese from the rapacious King Lepold of the Belgians. This reinforces the stereotype that Black people can't do anything for themselves.

The perverted logic also hides the truth -- that in fact there were many African sheroes and heroes:  Nehanda of Zimbabwe; Empress Taytu Betul and Emperor Menelik of Ethiopia; Samori Ture in West Africa; Tchaka of the Zulus; the Mahdi in the Sudan; and those of the modern era such as Nkrumah, Nyerere, Mandela, Samora, Biko, and many others.

Tarzan could impress American children, including African Americans, with the false notion that there were or are no African heroes.

When it comes to historical narratives --factual history and mythology and the creation of heroes-- the scale is decidedly tipped against African people and descendants of Africa.

Tarzan continues the now discredited narrative of the White male as "King of the jungle" or Master over Africa.

I see that Tarzan and Jane have a child at the end of the movie, setting up a sequel.

There are many good movies that can be shot in Africa or that can involve Africa.

Don't make another Tarzan movie.
