turtlebug started this petition to Mayor of Philadelphia Jim Kenney and

With your support 12 parcels of land in Philadelphia could be preserved for natural respite, creativity, and play. For land, natural land and open spaces, are dwindling at a rapid rate. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the value of open spaces by setting aside a corner in the Hawthorne Neighborhood of Philadelphia for free, natural play, stewardship, and wildlife. Imagine if there was a tiny forest on every corner.

Let's preserve the 13th and Bainbridge Street Parcels!

“We must save not only the wilderness but the vacant lots, the ditches, as well as the canyon lands, and the wood lots along with the old growth.” Pyle, R. M.

Since September (2020), while seeking playful outdoor respite, a handful of 1-2 years olds haply became stewards and playful caretakers for these 12 parcels. Each day they delved curiously into the affordances of the loose parts and lost themselves in a self designed imaginary array. They made paper from tree leaves and tumbled broken glass, creating smooth keepsakes. Each day these adventures furthered their connection to the land and love of place.

“If we allow children to shape their own small worlds in childhood, then they will grow up knowing and feeling that they can participate in shaping the big world tomorrow.” Sobel, D.

If you have read this far, it is my hope that you will sign this petition and share it with your friends and neighbors.

We lovingly call this place turtlebug. Named after the first living creature we encountered, which was a ladybug. Curious? Want to know more? Follow our adventures.

Here's to saving space for natural play.

“The catalyst that converts any physical location - any environment if you will - into a place, is the process of experiencing deeply. A place is a piece of the whole environment that has been claimed by feelings. Viewed simply as a life-support system, the earth is an environment. Viewed as a resource that sustains our humanity, the earth is a collection of places.” - Alan Gussow
