Make Rockwell Open 24 Hours
This petition had 671 supporters
The Fashion School, Rockwell Hall, at Kent State University currently has hours that are adversely affecting the mental health and quality of work of its fashion design students. Presently, the building is closed 12 am - 6 am Monday - Saturday and closes at 8 pm Sunday nights to reopen at 6 am Monday mornings. Students face the possibility of being penalized if they are in the building outside of operating hours. Many students have outside commitments such as jobs, other classes, and university activities that prevent them from working in the studio during open hours. Additionally, some students simply do better work at night than during daytime hours. The university justifies this by saying it is for the students' safety and mental health. However, other buildings, such as the architecture building and visual arts buildings, allow their students 24-hour access via keycard. This system seems to be working fine for them. The current system within The Fashion School also causes a decline in the mental health of its design students. By not giving the students the freedom to utilize the studio when their schedule allows, it is placing unnecessary stress on them. We, the fashion design students of Kent State University, as well as their concerned friends, family, and community members, call for the university to allow fashion students to access Rockwell Hall 24 hours a day via a keycard.
