Kent County Council must maintain their land to maximise benefits for nature.

The Issue

Kent County Council currently maintains the majority of its land as frequently-mown short grass, while pavement edges and other out-of-the-way corners are regularly sprayed with herbicide. We, as Kent residents and council tax payers, wish to see a more landscape, wildlife and planet friendly approach taken here in Kent, the Garden of England. By mowing and spraying flowering plants, our County is impoverished and made sterile. Kent must lead from the front and only undertake such intensive maintenance regimes where there is a clear land-use or safety need. Kent County Council's 'Plan Bee Pollinator Action Plan' states that the Council will 'manage the land it owns or controls or can influence in a way which can benefit pollinators' forage and habitat', however, 2021 has even seen grass cutting regimes intensify across large parts of Kent, especially in Maidstone, the County Town. Kent County Council must show by their actions whether they care about our pollinators and other declining wildlife, or not. We strongly believe that a silent majority of Kent residents would rather see beautiful wildflowers, butterflies, bees and birds flourishing year-round than lifeless closely-mown 'bowling greens'.
