Support Full-time, In-Person School at Delaware Academy

The Issue

We, the undersigned, would like all students be welcomed into Delaware Academy full-time and in-person.

Studies have shown that elementary students are not likely to result in community spread of the Covid-19 virus, and should be offered full-time, in-person instruction as per NYDOH, CDC and AAP recommendations.

Delaware Academy agreed to reassess their Covid-19 plan after 10 weeks. It is clear that a hybrid model does not work for students, especially those in elementary school. We would like to see the 10 week evaluation result in more students in class, in-person, full-time, with an emphasis on elementary students.

Students of Delaware Academy are at risk of falling behind, with early reading being of particular concern. Children at risk for delay are going without necessary supports, such as AIS and reading supports. Opportunities for early interventions may be missed due to lack of in-person learning. The AAP and CDC have both issued papers describing the many dangers of not providing in-person education.

The NYDOH recommends that masks be worn by all individuals at all times, and masks are required to be worn any time social distancing cannot be maintained. Delaware Academy has decided to both social distance and require a mask. According to NYDOH, appropriate social distancing means 6’ of space in all directions OR the use of appropriate physical barriers. The NYDOH recommends installing “physical barriers, such as sneeze guards and partitions, particularly in areas where it is difficult for individuals to remain at least 6 feet apart”. Delaware Academy isn’t using any of the barriers deemed acceptable by NYDOH and CDC, including strip curtains, cubicle walls and other impermeable partitions like plexiglass. The NYDOH and the CDC also recommend schools consider additional or alternative learning spaces. Delaware Academy has not repurposed any of it’s large spaces to accommodate more children.

Funding is one of the hurdles mentioned by Delaware Academy as to why more children cannot be in-person in school. Barriers and alternative spaces should be utilized to get more students in school without requiring additional staff. Funds and staff should be prioritized for in-person learning rather than for specials and extracurriculars. A four day week is another way other districts are saving funds.

Delaware Academy has always prided itself on educational excellence. We believe the school must come through, especially during this difficult time, and provide the safe, in-person learning environment our students so desperately need.
