Labour MPs to fight for the UK to Remain in the European Union.

The Issue

We, being Labour members, Labour voters, and/or your constituents, request that you, as our representatives, commit to to preventing the UK leaving the European Union, and vote in Parliament against triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, on the grounds that:

1. Remain was the Labour Party's campaigning position prior to the Referendum.

2. The Referendum held on June 23rd was advisory only and only 37.4% of the electorate actually voted Leave, which should not be sufficient for a major constitutional change.

3. The Leave campaign's promises were either promptly rescinded after the referendum, or are mutually exclusive. The vote was therefore has no credibility and should be considered invalid.

4. There are no terms for Brexit which are as advantageous to the UK, with respect to security or prosperity, as remaining a member state of the European Union. This was Labour's position during the campaign, and nothing has changed.

5. Labour Conference 2016 resolved that; '... unless the final settlement proves to be acceptable then the option of retaining EU membership should be retained... The final settlement should therefore be subject to approval, through Parliament and potentially through a general election or referendum'.

6. Lack of clarity from the PLP on this matter is now causing a loss of committed Labour members from the party.
