Keeping our beloved bamboos
The Issue
We seek your support to save our bamboos planted at the low-lying land near our overhead bridge.
Our beloved bamboos are going to be cut and uprooted by our Town Council/Housing Development Board (HDB). We understand that they wanted to do so because the bamboos were not planted by their horticulturists.
While we understand their sentiment, bamboos are nature's miracle silent workers, which we have all been benefiting from, one way or another.
Functionalities
These bamboos have been:
- Absorbing excess water to prevent flooding
- Preventing mosquito breeding
- Supplying 30% more oxygen than any other tree
- Easy to maintain
- Enhancing the greenery of the estate
- A natural barricade against dust, sound and other pollutants for the housing estate facing the congested Upper Serangoon road
The most important functionality we need to be reminded of is its ability to prevent flooding. If we let them be uprooted, its loss can pose an immediate threat to our families - the low-lying area will be a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. With dengue cases at an all time high, subjecting ourselves to a reduced line of defence might not be the best move on our part.
Surrounding estates with bamboos
We are not the only estate to have enjoyed the benefits that the bamboos have brought thus far. Coincidentally, here are some areas within our estate to have also taken to the benefits of the bamboo.
- Blocks 119 & 118 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 (facing the car park)
- Block 2 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh HDB (diagonally opposite Pei Chun School)
- Block 218 Lorong 8
Media Attention
These bamboos have taken more than 2 years to reach such poetic and serene beauty. The CNA Green Plan Online Town Challenge had chosen our bamboos as one of the top three winning entries. It is evident that with our bamboos, it is in line with the “Plant a Million Trees by 2030” movement and this win is just another example of how the community is working together to make Singapore a greener and more sustainable place to live in.
How you can help
You can do your part to save these hard-working silent workers. We are requesting for the Town Council/HDB to meet us halfway by only trimming the bamboo leaves. Show your support by signing this petition so that we can put our voices together and be heard.
