Keeping Hiromi Kaneda

The Issue

We, as Professor Kaneda's former and current students, strongly urge the school administration to reconsider the decision to terminate Professor Kaneda. Pepperdine University is deciding to not renew her Visa, and therefore, she would not be able to return after the end of this semester.

Professor Kaneda consistently goes above and beyond to ensure her students' success in learning and practicing the Italian language while fostering an engaging and exciting environment. For many of us, she has been our introduction to Italian culture, and her vibrant and supportive manner has significantly enriched our educational experience.

Professor Kaneda’s dedication to her students is unparalleled. She has created an inclusive and stimulating classroom atmosphere where students feel encouraged to participate, grow, and develop a deep appreciation for Italian studies. Her contagious humor and down to earth manner is rare to find in a professor, and is truly an asset to the Pepperdine community. She is not only an exceptional educator but also a mentor who provides guidance, encouragement, and support beyond the classroom.

Beyond her teaching excellence, Professor Kaneda has actively contributed to the academic community at Pepperdine University. Her research on the economic and societal transformations in post-World War Two Italy and Japan demonstrates her commitment to scholarship and intellectual exploration. Her work enriches the field of Italian studies and adds tremendous value to the university’s academic reputation.

The loss of Professor Kaneda would be a significant detriment to both students and the institution as a whole. We believe that her presence at Pepperdine is invaluable and that her contributions warrant recognition and support rather than termination.

We respectfully request that the administration reconsider its decision and reinstate Professor Kaneda in her position. We urge the university to acknowledge the profound impact she has had on her students and the academic community and to allow her to continue inspiring and educating future students.
