The Issue

🚨 What’s the Issue?
Worcestershire County Council is considering introducing parking charges at local countryside and beauty spotsacross Worcestershire.

These include places people use every day for:

walking and dog walking
mental health and stress relief
children’s outdoor play
free fitness activities and community groups
social connection, especially for older residents
The council has suggested the charges could raise around £90,000 a year, but has not explained how that money would be used, whether it would be ring-fenced for improvements, or what the real-world impact would be on communities.

This isn’t a small change. Charging for parking effectively charges people to access nature.

❓ Why People Are Concerned
It risks driving people away from outdoor activity, at a time when physical and mental health should be protected
It disproportionately affects older residents, families, and lower-income households
It pushes cars onto nearby roads, creating congestion and safety issues
It threatens community groups, fitness sessions, events, and local businesses that rely on accessible green spaces
It could increase long-term healthcare costs by discouraging active lifestyles
This proposal has been tried before and was withdrawn after major public opposition. The fact it’s resurfacing without clear answers or consultation has understandably raised alarm.

⚠️ Why This Needs Attention Now
These decisions often start as “ideas” or “options” and quietly become policy if people don’t speak up early.
Once charges are introduced, they are rarely removed.

This is the moment to question it, challenge it, and demand transparency — not after the signs go up.
