Today I was at the county court, where Jackson Williams walked out basically a free man. A two and a half year community corrections order, 200hrs unpaid community work, and a six-month exclusion from licensed venues.
As I told the media outside the court, today is a sad and scary day for women! Yet again the precedent has been set so so low and another man who thinks he had the right to do that to a woman is released onto the streets.
What this has spurred me on further to do is become louder and louder. We don't know if there is much of a chance for the OPP to appeal. But this is about so much more than Jackson Williams. This is about a woman's right to go about her business in a safe world and to ensure that those who can make the systemic changes make them!!!
Too often than not, the so-called justice system that is there to protect us, continues to fail us as women! This is not a criticism of the judge today. It feels like our justice system is sadly as unsafe as our streets.
I am a mum of three beautiful girls, and I want us to go about our business, day or night, in a world where we are safe.
The laws need to change. As women, we deserve better. I am sick of seeing these stories.
Next week, I'll be at Victorian Parliament with Derryn Hinch and Stuart Grimley of the Justice Party. They're accepting this petition, and we're going to fight to make betters laws to keep women safe.
