Keep Western Australia’s coast mine free

The issue

“The overwhelming view of my community is that mining exploration licenses are incompatible with Local and State strategies.”

- Stephen Birkbeck, Farmer and ecotourism operator from Denmark, Western Australia

Denmark is a small town on Western Australia’s south coast, visited by hundreds of thousands of Aussies each year who are drawn to its natural beauty. Our region is one of 34 global biodiversity ‘hot spots’ - the most species-rich but threatened places on the planet. The community is deeply concerned about the impact of mining on Denmark’s unspoiled environment.

Our community is only just recovering from bushfires and now faces a new threat to its flora and fauna; this time from mining.

The Denmark Environment Center is calling on the WA Minister for Mines to stop the mining company United Funds from exploring our region.

United Funds applied for an exploration license one year ago. Due to a regulatory loophole, the town was kept in the dark. Because the community wasn’t made aware of the application, we were unable to object. Until now.

We have engaged with the Denmark Shire Council who have helped us to reopen the formal objection period.

Now, we need your support to convince the Minister that Denmark does not want exploration and mining in our region.

If the government approves this license it could have serious impacts on the environment. If traces of below ground metals are found, the next step could be the construction of large, invasive mines. These typically require toxic dams and on-site processing using corrosive chemicals.

The area being considered for mining is bordered by old growth forest and pristine coastline, including tourist hotspot Greens Pool.

The community has been clear - Denmark should stay mine free.

Time is of the essence. Please help this special pocket of the world stay mining free and #signtostopthemine.
