Keep Walworth Road Balanced — Stop the Fast Food Establishment Overload
Keep Walworth Road Balanced — Stop the Fast Food Establishment Overload
The Issue
Walworth Road is becoming dominated by fast‑food establishments, which is affecting the street and residents’ quality of life. As a resident I am frustrated and genuinely concerned about the impact this concentration of fast‑food outlets has on our community, including:
- Increased noise and litter
- Erosion of street variety and local character
- Negative impact on children and teenagers, contributing to high rates of obesity
- Higher delivery traffic and congestion
There are currently at 15+ fast‑food outlets along Walworth Road, many of them being chicken shops and many more units being converted into additional fast‑food establishments.
This trend directly contradicts Southwark Council’s Healthy Weight Strategy 2022‑27, which commits the borough to creating healthier environments and improving access to nutritious food as part of tackling high levels of overweight and obesity locally. The strategy aims to reduce health inequalities and support healthy food choices for all residents, particularly children.
Walworth Road runs through an area with multiple schools and young families, making the high density of fast-food outlets near schools especially concerning.
We are calling on Southwark Council to:
- Limit the number of new fast-food outlets on Walworth Road to preserve a diverse street and support community health.
- Apply the objectives of the Healthy Weight Strategy when assessing planning applications, especially around schools and areas with children.
- Protect existing non-food businesses and essential services from being replaced by fast-food establishments.
SIGN this petition if you want:
✅ A balanced, community-friendly high street
✅ Less noise, litter, and delivery congestion
✅ A street that supports the health and wellbeing of residents, children, and families
📌 Walworth Road should be a street for everyone — not just fast-food outlets.
