The Issue

Countless fans and supporters have voiced their frustration with the Utah Utes changing their iconic ‘Drum & Feather’ or ‘Circle & Feather’ logo and more frequently using the ‘throwback interlocking U’ logo.
Not only has this logo been used for almost all Utah Football uniforms post WWII, the logo has carried nostalgia through generations. With subtle changes or major uniform alterations throughout the history of the program, one thing has always stayed consistent. A red U in a white circle, with 2 feathers hanging from its side.

Transitioning away from this logo abandons the pride and respect of who they named their team after - the Ute tribe. The University of Utah has shown a great deal of respect and loyalty to the Native American community. Throughout the years the University has carried on and embraced the Ute legacy by having hundreds of thousands, even millions of people represent, and celebrate the Native American people vicariously through their sports teams.

Now that loyalty and pride seems to be questionable. Removing a logo with rich heritage is another act of erasing Native American culture from modern history. This is something that cannot be “fazed out” by replacing it with a modernized and inauthentic logo.

The Utah Utes need to reprioritize their values and wear the Drum & Feather with the same pride in who they are named after. Embrace the fans who share nostalgia tied their iconic logo through multiple generations.
