Keep Us Safe on Strickland Ave, South Hobart - A Safe and Continuous Pedestrian Link

The issue

Keep us safe on Strickland Avenue, South Hobart

Strickland Avenue is a vital route in Cascades/South Hobart but is currently without a safe and continuous pedestrian footpath to support the surrounding population.

We need the City of Hobart to design and construct a safe and continuous pedestrian link along Strickland Avenue from the Cascade Brewery silos to the intersection of Marlyn Road to ensure the safety of all road users, including vulnerable pedestrians such as children. People should be able to be active in their local communities and we need safe footpaths to support this.

This area of Strickland Ave currently has a patchwork of footpaths and road shoulders which endanger pedestrians walking in their neighbourhood as they often have to walk right next to and at the same level as vehicle traffic. This patchwork includes:

  • Sections of narrow footpaths at the same level as the road, with no line-marking to separate pedestrians from vehicles on the road.

  • Sections of narrow footpaths at the same level of the road that vehicles are able to park on, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road to continue their journey.

  • No footpaths forcing pedestrians to walk on thin sections of the side of the road (with a steep bank down toward the rivulet).

  • No safe access to bus stops for school children and commuters.

  • Minimal signage to promote safe driving practices.

We need a safe and continuous pedestrian link on Strickland Ave before a tragic accident happens. We call on the City of Hobart to take action by providing pedestrian connections which encourage active transport and support the local community to safely travel around their neighbourhood.
