Now, as a parent, my children attend this beloved local institution, and I want them to experience the same close-knit environment and personalized education that shaped my formative years.

The recent proposal from the Superintendent to close Tygarts Valley High School and merge it with Elkins High School raises significant concerns within our community in Mill Creek, WV. The proposed consolidation not only threatens the quality of education but disregards the value small schools like ours add to the community – a community where education is tightly woven with local traditions and personal connections.

In early July, the Superintendent's report proposed multiple restructuring options, and while circulating on social media platforms, it became clear many supported keeping Tygarts Valley open while consolidating several Elkins elementary schools instead. The community's voice is clear: we desire a solution that maintains our local high school and reflects better financial management without sacrificing our school's heritage and students' futures.

Closing Tygarts Valley High School could lead to overcrowding at Elkins High and diminish the personalized learning experience smaller classrooms offer. Studies have shown that smaller schools often yield higher student engagement and stronger support networks for students, which results in better academic outcomes.
