Keep toxic materials out of children's toys

Keep toxic materials out of children's toys
The Issue
Every day, parents are unknowingly exposing their kids to toys and products that contain at least one of 49 known hazardous chemicals. Loopholes in the laws that are supposed to protect our children allow over 4500 products in stores that put New York’s children at risk for a wide range of medical conditions, including cancer, behavioral problems and learning disabilities.
If we can get monsters out of closets, bring toys back to life, and heal scrapes with a kiss, we can get our legislators in Albany to pass the Child Safe Products Act and get these toxins out of our kids’ hands.
No parent would feed their child arsenic or paint with lead paint, but toys and pacifiers can contain arsenic, lead, cadmium and cobalt. These compounds can cause kidney damage, bone fragility and lung cancer. All of these toxic chemicals (and more) are available in the kids’ aisles across New York at stores in your neighborhood.
Nationally, Congress has failed to protect us by leaving thousands of chemicals untested and unregulated in children’s toys and products. Rather than rely on Washington, Governor Cuomo has called on elected officials in Albany to take action to protect our kids by getting him a bill to sign this year.
The Child Safe Products Act would require the state to publish a list of high-concern chemicals, and if those chemicals were found in children’s products, then manufacturers would be required to stop using them in any products that come into contact with children here in New York.
This legislation would be groundbreaking. New York can lead the country in adopting common sense rules that give our elected leaders the tools they need to protect our families and our children.
If you agree that companies need to remove hazardous toxins from our children’s toys and pacifiers, sign this petition to the New York State Senate right now!
