“Keep Them Wild: Oppose Captivity and Support Wildlife Sanctuaries”
The Issue
Every year, numerous wild animals are trapped and held in terrible conditions, enduring poor care, overcrowded enclosures, and experiencing restricted freedom. Such practices inflict severe distress and harm upon these animals while also eroding natural biodiversity and further endangering species.
According to an article of Premium Times in 2022 entitled, "World Wildlife Day 2022: ‘1.6 trillion wild animals killed annually'" states that an estimated 1.6 trillion wild animals are killed by humans every year (Mojeen, 2022). According to Edith Kabesiime, World Animal Protection's wildlife campaigns manager, highlighted the broad negative impacts of wildlife interference, affecting animals, humans, and the planet alike. She stressed that whether the wildlife trade is legal or illegal, it constitutes exploitation and abuse. "We urge the CITES Secretariat and its parties to adopt resolutions that protect, rather than exploit wild animals" said Ms. Kabesiime. The statement also pointed out the global demand for Africa’s iconic species like African grey parrots and ball pythons, noting how this multibillion-dollar exotic wildlife trade, whether through capture from the wild or breeding in captivity, inflicts severe suffering on millions of animals and threatens their survival worldwide.
In addition, snakes are among the most misunderstood animals, with instinct-driven behaviors that are often difficult for logic-oriented humans to relate to. This lack of understanding commonly leads to fear, prompting some people to kill snakes on sight in the mistaken belief that it enhances their safety. However, encountering a snake does not inherently increase danger. Ironically, attempting to harm a snake actually raises the risk of being bitten, as the snake instinctively resorts to its last defense mechanism in an effort to protect itself.
A University of Florida survey reveals that dog bites are more common than bites from venomous snakes, yet we don't harm every dog we encounter, do we? This should remind us that every animal has a crucial role in keeping our planet healthy and deserves to live freely in the wild. Instead of driving our wildlife towards extinction, we should act responsibly to create a world free from animal cruelty, caring for the health of both humans and animals. Let us foster a world that values protection over extinction.
By signing this petition, we express our commitment to the welfare of all wildlife and our belief in the importance of their freedom and proper care. We urge immediate action to endorse and foster environments where wild animals can thrive in sanctuaries, not suffer in captivity. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of these important members of our world.
"A life in captivity is a world away from a life in the wild. Wild animals are not commodities; they belong in the wild."
