The Issue

Our beloved Tennessee Valley Fair location at the Historical Chilhowee  Park in East Knoxville is up for possible irreversible changes from our Mayor Indya Kincannon and City Council. The TN Valley Fair on Magnolia Ave in East Knox is rich with tradition and history. Its not only speacil and nostalgic for  Knoxville residents but also for thousands of people from nearby cities & towns. The Chilhowee park has been the location for the TN Valley Fair for 106 years!  It's not just about rides & food,  the TVA & I Fair ( its original name before it was shortened) is more about agriculture, the arts & community. The fair hosts lifestock exhibits, and youth competitions with scholarships  available. Moving the fair to another location seems very impractical and extremely costly to the city. Having to rebuild structures that already exist defies logic. A new amphitheater stadium for the concerts. New barn structures for all the poultry, cows, sheep, goats & pigs. Also a new arena for the rodeo & demolition derby shows. A new structure to replace the Jacobs building for all the art, crafts, quilts and photography exhibits that will need to be displayed. Does the city have this kind of money to demolish existing buildings just to rebuild everything at a new location? Unless the plan all along is to do away with the fair as we know it all together. There have been many changes made by our recent  and previous Mayors that many have not agreed with. One example being changing Cumberland Ave from 4 lanes to 2 lanes, creating an absolute chaotic mess in that area for no reason. Also closing the historic Gay Street bridge and refusing to put any funds towards making the bridge operational again.  Instead making plans to put millions of dollars towards a pedestrian bridge across the river to South Knox that will only serve a few and is a blatant waste of tax payer money. Please sign this Petition to make your voice heard before we lose our historical 106  year old Fair location  just as we have lost so many other historical sites and landmarks to bad decisions by our leaders.  The historical Jacob's building is now going to be used by the Muse museum,  I believe that is already a done deal. This Tuesday August 19,  I believe the city council will be voting on Chilhowee Park selling the land on the other side of the fair grounds called the Midway. They want to sell the land so they can build a Emerald Youth sports Complex. I believe most people are all for a sports complex. But when you go down the street of Magnolia, there are many blighted boarded up buildings sitting on property that could be bought and repurposed for a Sports Complex. One of the nicest properties on Magnolia is the Chilhowee Park with all of its historical nostalgic buildings. Why change & disrupt this beautiful area when there are properties right down the road that are in desperate need of revitalization and change.  Sign the petition to save the TN Valley Fair from being  booted from the only location it has ever been at.
