The Issue

As a concerned parent residing in the Ridgely elementary school boundary, I have witnessed the overwhelming traffic congestion that occurs during the Illinois State Fair. Our children deserve a safe and stress-free journey to and from school, but the current start dates, which coincide with this major event, create an unsafe environment for our young ones traveling to school.

The Illinois State Fair is a celebrated tradition drawing tens of thousands of attendees daily, resulting in heavy traffic on roads leading to and from schools, particularly in areas adjacent to the fairgrounds. This not only poses significant safety risks for students commuting but also results in major delays and frustration for parents and school staff trying to maintain punctual schedules.

The congestion is more than just an inconvenience; it creates potentially hazardous situations for children who stand at bus stops on the streets coroner around the fairgrounds or students who walk or bike to school and for school buses navigating crowded streets. In many instances, emergency vehicles find it impossible to maneuver efficiently through this traffic, putting everyone at risk.

By adjusting the school start date to post-fair, we can enhance the safety of our children and ensure a smoother transition into the new academic year. This change would enable parents, teachers, and administrators to focus on education rather than traffic woes, and maintain the welfare of the Ridgely Elementary family community.

Statistics show that school-related pedestrian injuries peak around major events, making this adjustment not only reasonable but necessary. Neighboring districts have successfully implemented similar adjustments with significant positive feedback.

Join me in urging the Springfield School District Board to shift the start of the school year to commence after the conclusion of the Illinois State Fair. A minor schedule amendment can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of our children. Your support in signing this petition can create the impetus for vital change needed in our community. Please sign our petition to keep the district 186 school start date after the Illinois State fair for the safety of our Ridgely. Elementary students, families and staff.

Thank you to all Ridgely and District staff, students and families who have signed this petition. I love seeing the community unite over a common goal, especially when it is to advocate for our students. I have seen and heard the outcry about the proposed calendar and want you to know that. My vote is always based on the opinions of my constituents, and though Ridgely is not in my Subdistrict, I have gotten many emails from my constituents who support Ridgely as well. Thank you for raising valid concerns for our students' safety- as a full time employee of the Department of Agriculture since 2013, and a summer employee for most summers before that going back to 2006, I fully understand the stress and headache the State Fair causes to those of us who are in the area for more than just the 10 days of the fair. I urge you to continue to advocate for your community and students, and I hope this opportunity for the community to band together leads to an even stronger and more supportive group surrounding Ridgely and it's students. Thank you! Kristin Barnett
