Keep the squash courts at Westgate Leisure Chichester
This petition had 437 supporters
Everyone Active are taking over the management of Westgate Leisure Chichester and are closing the squash courts to make more space for other activities.
Low attendance and an anticipated lower ROI (return on investment) compared to other activities are being used as primary arguments to justify the closure of the courts.
However, it is actually difficult to book a court at peak times – even a week in advance. A club night runs on Mondays (and has been for over 20 years) and there is also a squash league that runs each calendar month (and in it's 5th year). This is in addition to many others that play squash regularly.
Squash is a fantastic form of exercise with a competitive element that motivates you to push yourself even harder. You work your core, stamina, cardio, upper body, reactions/hand-eye coordination and brain through jumping, bending, lunging, twisting, dodging and tactics. Men's Fitness says 'You'll burn more than 1,000 calories an hour' playing squash!
Closing the squash courts will reduce the different types of activities available at Westgate Leisure when choice and sports participation should be increasing to realise the vision of the Olympic Legacy and also to encourage and inspire the next generation.
Closing the courts is not the only option. For example, to help with ROI the courts could be used at low-peak times to run smaller sessions for classes like yoga, circuits or zumba.
