Keep the Laingholm Beach Palms - Update

Eva KaminskiAuckland, New Zealand
20 July 2026

Hello supporters,

Thank you to everyone who has signed our petition and spoken up for the iconic palm trees at Laingholm Beach.

Auckland Council has now released an updated concept plan for Sandys Parade following a second round of community consultation. While some changes have been made in response to feedback, the proposal still includes the removal of four Phoenix palms from the reserve.

The revised plan now includes:

More shade trees
A larger open grass area in the northern half of the reserve
A defined boat launching area
Removal of four Phoenix palms
Replacing the mid-beach vehicle access with lawn

This is a critical stage in the process. If you value the unique character and heritage of Laingholm Beach, now is the time to make your views known.

AKL Council - Feedback on Laingholm Beach Upgrade

Consultation closes on 31 August 2026.

The palm trees are a distinctive and much-loved part of the Laingholm foreshore. While the updated plan addresses some community concerns, the proposal to remove four palms remains. Every submission helps demonstrate how strongly the community values these landmark trees and the character they bring to our beach.

Thank you for continuing to support the campaign to keep the Laingholm Beach palms.
