The Issue

At Oakwood Primary School, the safety of our children is paramount. We, the parents, carers, and residents, have relied on the presence and vigilance of our School Crossing Patrol Officer, Lisa, to ensure the safe passage of our children across the often busy and chaotic roads surrounding the school. Lisa is not just a crossing patrol; she is a valued member of our community who knows our children by name and greets them with a warm smile each day.

Unfortunately, Southampton City Council has proposed to discontinue the crossing patrol service at Oakwood Primary School, a decision that we strongly oppose. This service is crucial, particularly during the busy morning and afternoon periods when traffic is at its peak, and children are most vulnerable. The loss of this service could significantly increase the risk of accidents, putting our children in harm's way.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that pedestrian casualties in children aged 5-15 are a significant concern, with hundreds of injuries recorded annually across the UK. Having a trained School Crossing Patrol Officer can significantly reduce these numbers. Lisa’s presence at the crossing not only slows down traffic but also provides a reliable point of safety for children, parents, and caregivers alike.

Moreover, Lisa's role extends beyond her statutory duties. She has personally intervened in numerous potentially dangerous situations, thanks to her familiarity with the children and understanding of pedestrian safety. Her role in the community cannot be underestimated, and the peace of mind she provides to parents is invaluable.

Discontinuing this service undercuts the community's trust and undermines the commitment to child safety. We propose that Southampton City Council maintain and fund Lisa's position, ensuring that our children's safety remains a top priority.

We urge all members of the Southampton community, supporters of child safety, and champions of education to stand with us. Let us work together to ensure our children can travel to and from school safely, a fundamental right that should never be compromised.

Please sign this petition to keep our crossing patrol service active and secure the continued safety of Oakwood Primary School's children.
