Keep the Lowcountry Tradition of Boiled Peanuts on Ashley River Road

Keep the Lowcountry Tradition of Boiled Peanuts on Ashley River Road
The Issue
What’s happening?
Jennifer and Tim Miller want to carry on a Lowcountry tradition by selling boiled peanuts at a historic local spot—but their permit has been delayed due to unclear and slow county procedures. All of the paperwork has been completed and due to a technicality within the Ordinances, the County is requiring this small food truck who only operates 2-3 days a week to construct curbs, parking, handicap accessible entrances and bathrooms. This is a simple set up: pickup truck pulling a trailer selling only boiled peanuts and bottled drinks that drives away from the location at the end of every day. These requirements are not necessary for this type of operation. In this case, the requirements do not make sense.
Why it matters
Boiled peanuts have been part of our culture for decades, and that location has been a gathering place for generations. Supporting this small business preserves a piece of our heritage, grows community pride, and boosts the local economy.
What we’re asking
• Councilman Moody and the County Council: please review and expedite the permit process.
• Institute clear, consistent guidelines for food permits but that make sense for each specific scenario.
• Recognize and support small local vendors and cultural traditions.
The County Council works for the community and they serve to do what is best for everyone. We want to show them that this is what the community wants and supports.
