Keep the Japanese Program at Wayne State University
The Issue
The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is pushing to cut the Japanese program at Wayne State University.
I graduated from Wayne State with a degree in Asian Studies, concentrating in Japanese and Chinese, in 2022. The professors greatly contributed to my understanding of Japanese language and culture, and I formed close ties with other students in my major. The Wayne State Japanese program also enabled me to study abroad in Japan for a year on the MEXT Japanese Studies Scholarship.
Many young people are interested in learning about Japanese language and culture; additionally, learning a second language is very valuable in today's global society. Wayne State claims to be Michigan's most diverse university, so this ideal should be upheld by continuing to offer a variety of courses aimed at teaching about different languages and cultures in the world.
