Keep the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room Open to Every Reporter
The Issue
The James S. Brady Press Briefing Room is where Americans get answers from the White House. Now President Donald Trump has posted images on Truth Social showing that room turned into a gold-trimmed indoor swimming pool. The New York Post described him as musing about the idea, and the post landed in the middle of a growing fight over which reporters are allowed inside.
The White House has moved to keep reporters from CNN, MS Now and Politico off the grounds. On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the administration to let those three outlets back in for at least two weeks while the lawsuit continues. In response to the ban, the five TV networks that share pool coverage (ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC) stepped back from the pool, at least for now.
The room carries real history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt had a pool built there in 1933 while living with polio. President Richard Nixon floored it over to make space for the press. The room was later named for James Brady, President Ronald Reagan's press secretary, who was badly wounded in the 1981 attempt on Reagan's life. His name on that room stands for a simple idea: the public has a right to question the people in power.
Asked last year about fixing up the briefing room, Trump said, "I don't want you to be comfortable," according to the New York Post.
Press access should not depend on which party holds the White House or which outlets a President likes. Congress can protect it by guaranteeing a working briefing room and fair access for every credentialed reporter.
Sign the petition to protect the Brady Briefing Room and fair press access now, while the court fight over who gets in is still underway.
