Keep the Goats at Mullum Mullum Creek

The issue

For the past year, goats grazing along Mullum Mullum Creek have quietly made a powerful difference.

These goats have helped naturally manage invasive weeds and overgrown shrubbery without the need for harmful herbicides. This is not just a charming initiative, it is a smart, environmentally responsible solution that protects one of our most important local waterways.

Herbicides used near creeks can run off into the water, impacting water quality and harming wildlife. Mullum Mullum Creek is home to species such as platypus, rakali (native water rats), frogs, lizards, birds, and countless smaller organisms that rely on a healthy ecosystem to survive. Reducing chemical use in this area directly protects these animals and supports biodiversity.

The goats provide a natural alternative. They reach difficult terrain, reduce weed density, and allow native vegetation to regenerate without introducing toxins into the soil or creek system. This approach is sustainable, effective, and far kinder to the environment.

But the benefits do not stop there.

The goats have also become a source of joy, connection, and wellbeing for the community. Locals regularly stop to watch them, chat with neighbours, bring their children to visit, or simply enjoy a peaceful moment by the creek. Their presence encourages people to walk more, spend time outdoors, and feel connected to both nature and each other.

At a time when community mental health, social connection, and physical wellbeing are more important than ever, this program offers real, tangible benefits.

We are calling on council to continue the goat grazing program at Mullum Mullum Creek and recognise its value for both the environment and the community.

Please sign this petition to help protect a natural, chemical-free solution that supports wildlife, the creek, and the people who love it.

Together, we can keep the goats and keep Mullum Mullum Creek thriving.
