Keep the Dance Program Alive at Urbana High School

Keep the Dance Program Alive at Urbana High School

The Issue

The dance program at Urbana High School has been a source of inspiration and personal growth for countless students over the years. It has provided a creative outlet for self-expression, fostered discipline and teamwork, and nurtured the artistic talents of our students. By eliminating the dance program, we would be depriving our students of an invaluable opportunity to explore their creativity and develop crucial life skills.

The dance program at the high school made a huge impact on my life back in my junior and senior year at UHS. When I had bad days and was overwhelmed dealing with my anxiety I was able to put that emotion into the dance. I had an outlet that was theatre and the dance program. Without dance being an outlet to where students who can express themselves creatively  students may struggle to develop the physical skills needed to be comfortable and confident in their own bodies.

Moreover, the dance program has played a pivotal role in promoting inclusivity and diversity within our school community. It has brought together students from different backgrounds and cultures, fostering understanding, respect, and appreciation for one another. The program has been a unifying force, creating a sense of belonging and acceptance among our students.

Dance education is not just about learning steps; it’s about building confidence, encouraging collaboration, and promoting physical fitness. Studies have shown that arts education can significantly improve academic performance (source: Americans for the Arts). Our community must come together to ensure that future generations have access to these benefits.

Without  the dance program Urbana can’t have fun activities such as  Mr. Urbana, the Dance for Change recital, the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, the UHS Dance Company, and of sadly, the Expressions Recital which honors the traumatic passing of Christine LaRoi. And No Urbana student will be able to audition for All-County or All-State dance. No Urbana student will go to the Regional or National High School dance festivals. No more lipdubs, or flashmobs, or dance clubs.

Careful what you sign this is for a board of education school meeting. Please be appropriate.
