Keep the Community Wood Shop Open #willamawoodshop
The Issue
A special thanks to everyone that has supported our efforts and signed our petition, both online and in person. We collected a large number of signatures but the effort was apparently in vain. We went before the Willamalane Board to their monthly meeting and it was clear that they had already decided to "repurpose" the space and close the shop. We were given 3 minutes to make our case and allowed no further questions or discussion. An attempt was made to secure their budget information for the shop, so we could seek sponsorship to keep it open as an option, as they said it was not "profitable", and we were obstructed by their request for a very high fee for copies of the information. The shop has been closed. We feel it was still worth the effort. Thank you for your support.
In the heart of our Springfield community lies the Willamalane Adult Activity Center's Wood Shop, a haven where creativity and camaraderie intertwine. I've personally witnessed the transformative power this facility holds. From crafting intricate wood projects to building cabinets, chairs, and heartfelt gifts for grandkids, it serves as a creative outlet and a sanctuary for many. Veterans, retirees, and individuals without any other place to go find solace within its walls, learning new skills and forging lasting friendships.
The Wood Shop isn't just a place for woodworking; it's a space where lives are changed. Many members of our community have expressed that stepping into that workshop was nothing short of life-altering. After over 35 years of service, this fully equipped and professionally maintained facility faces closure on June 30th, 2025. Such a decision would cut off a vital and affordable resource for adults, hobbyists, and lifelong learners in both Springfield and Eugene.
Losing the Wood Shop would represent a significant cultural and social loss to our community. It has been a cornerstone, enabling residents to engage in meaningful activities, develop new skills, and build a sense of purpose. The legacy of shared knowledge and community building within those walls is unmatched in our area.
We urge the City of Springfield and the Willamalane Park and Recreation District to reconsider this closure. Instead, let's explore sustainable solutions such as forming partnerships with local businesses, applying for grants focused on adult education, or implementing a membership program to ensure the Wood Shop remains operational.
Preserving this beloved facility is not just a nod to community tradition, but an investment in the mental and emotional well-being of countless individuals. Please help us keep the doors of the Willamalane Wood Shop open by signing this petition. #willamawoodshop
