Keep the Birds In The Town Who Calls Itself Blue Eagles

The Issue

Hello! We are a family from Nazareth, PA that has a goal of being more independent from the high grocery prices. Last spring we decided on getting a chickens and have maintained a large family garden. We have shared our produce and eggs with close family, friends, and neighbors. when we received chicks, one of them turned out to be a rooster. Since that time, the rooster has grown on us and the community.

We were first contacted by the Nazareth Zoning Board member Anthony Disante, Aug 1st, 2022 stating that there were complaints with our rooster crowing at 5:30 am.

Ordinances were emailed referencing animal noise, "Possessing, harboring or keeping any animal or bird which makes any noise continuously and/or persistently for a period of fifteen (15) minutes or more, or makes such noise intermittently for a period of thirty (30) minutes or more, in such a manner as to create a noise disturbance."

Our agreement with Mr. Disante:

1.) Take rooster in at night, bring him out before work.

We have complied daily with this written agreement. We haven't heard from ANYONE since Aug 2022.

Two officers showed up unannounced at our residence on Friday April 14th, 2023, after we left for work. After we called Nazareth Police Department we were told that allegedly, "zoning, city council, and the mayor were meeting for months to review the code and how they could cite us for our rooster violating the noise/nuisance ordinance."

Our rooster has made a positive impact on our family and flock of chickens we have. How you may ask?

We now have no voles, rodents, feral cats, vultures, or ravens/black birds in our yard bothering our landscaping or garden.

Our neighbors bring their family members to visit our rooster/chickens, creating stronger community and social bonds.

Our rooster alerts us if someone comes in our yard or driveway.

He protects his flock and property as he was meant to do.

Having a rooster has been a great learning experience for our four year old son.

Take away points: Majority of neighbors enjoy the rooster. He is no louder than the cement company equipment and blasting. He is no louder or more annoying than any of the neighborhood dogs. He is no louder than any of the birds chirping in our yard or the snow geese we can hear in the quarry. He is not dangerous because he is caged. We are able to pick him up and carry him on our shoulders every night, as asked upon us, WITH NO ISSUES. We were not notified of continued issues/complaints.

Please help save our rooster so that the mayor and/or council do not have us rehome or kill him, like they have suggested.
