Keep the ban on grizzly bear hunting

The Issue

Grizzly bears, majestic symbols of wild America, have been under protection since the Endangered Species Act listing in 1975. These bears play a crucial role in the ecosystem as apex predators, supporting biodiversity and maintaining the balance of their habitat. Despite their slow population recovery, some regions are considering lifting the ban on hunting these iconic animals, which could have detrimental effects on both the grizzly bear population and the ecosystem.

Grizzly bears inhabit about 2% of their historic range in the contiguous United States, with an estimated 2,000 bears now thriving primarily in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide ecosystems. Though the population is slowly improving, it is still vulnerable to the threats posed by habitat fragmentation, climate change, and human encroachment. Lifting the ban could negate decades of conservation efforts and put grizzly bears back on the brink of extinction.

Hunting these bears for sport is not only cruel but also unnecessary. Studies have shown that non-lethal management practices, such as promoting bear-safe communities and using deterrents, are effective in managing human-bear conflicts. Furthermore, ecotourism centered around these magnificent creatures generates significant revenue for local communities and promotes conservation.

We urge policymakers to prioritize the preservation of this irreplaceable species by maintaining the ban on grizzly bear hunting. By doing so, we not only ensure the survival of the bears but also conserve the natural heritage for future generations. Please sign this petition to send a strong message: the protection of wildlife and the preservation of our planet should come first.
