The Issue

We, the students, parents, alumni, and community members of Thompson School District (TSD), are deeply concerned about the continued reductions in arts opportunities and the increasing financial barriers that are making it difficult for students to participate in music, theater, visual arts, and other creative programs. These reductions and barriers not only threaten the richness of our students' educational experiences but also jeopardize essential aspects of their personal development.

Arts education is not an “extra"—it is a crucial component of a well-rounded education. These programs provide students with invaluable leadership skills, discipline, creativity, emotional support, teamwork, and a profound sense of belonging. For countless students, programs such as marching band, choir, theater, and other creative outlets are more than just activities; they are lifelines. They offer a space for self-expression, personal growth, and community engagement that cannot be replicated through other subjects.

In recent years, funding for arts programs in TSD has been significantly reduced, leading to cuts in staff positions, limited resources, and increased fees for participation. These measures disproportionately affect students from low-income backgrounds who can greatly benefit from arts education but face substantial financial obstacles.

According to studies, students engaged in the arts are statistically more likely to excel in academic performance, showing higher GPAs and standardized test scores. They are also less likely to dropout, more likely to attend college, and show higher levels of community involvement. The arts cultivate a culture of empathy, critical thinking, and innovation—skills that are indispensable in today's evolving workforce.

We urge the Thompson School District Board and local policymakers to prioritize arts funding in our schools and actively seek solutions to make arts participation accessible to all students. These solutions could include reallocation of district funds, seeking community partnerships, and creating scholarship opportunities aimed at reducing financial barriers.

Join us in advocating for the arts and ensuring they remain vibrant and accessible within our district. We must act now to preserve these vital programs that enrich our schools and empower our students. Sign this petition to show your support for keeping the arts alive in TSD. Let your voice be heard.
