The Issue

Stillman Creek along with its surrounding wetlands and upland habitats comprise the largest New York State-owned wetland preserve in Blue Point, NY. The Preserve provides habitat for sensitive plants and wildlife, and helps in flood protection by absorbing flood waters. It is part of a larger network of open space within Blue Point that extends from the Great South Bay all the way to Sunrise Highway. It was formally protected by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 1982 and designated as a Bird Conservation Area in 2004. It has been in a natural state ever since.

Unfortunately, after more than 40 years of being untrammeled, the Preserve is being impacted by the creation of unneeded trails (the Preserve can be fully accessed from the beach) and the restoration of a non-historic, derelict fountain which will require the introduction of electric and water services into a natural area.  It's hard to believe, but true.  This petition is meant to reaffirm its status as a Preserve and to gain support for our efforts to continue to convey to New York State that it should be left in its natural state and "Forever Wild." This petition will ultimately be sent to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany and Stony Brook, NY, as well as to our locally elected officials. Thank you!
