Keep Starbucks Off Hamline Campus

The Issue

"I think that over the course of 12 years, I've seen Hamline become more of a business than a non-profit," Dancer said, "A lot of decisions are made based on the money involved, not based on the principles the university was founded on." - Former Director of Hamline Campus Postal Services in The Oracle. “Making the Cut.” September 2010.

Hamline University has made a contract with Starbucks to set up shop in the new ‘Carol Young Anderson and Dennis Anderson University Center.’ Have decision-makers at Hamline forgotten that the new Student Center is being built just a few yards away from GINKGO Coffeehouse--a favorite local hangout for youth in the Hamline-Midway community? Bringing in this corporate giant with a history of mistreating its workers(†) will hurt local business and undermine the credibility of Hamline when it claims to be “committed to community.” According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, the Aramark Corporation (the private company Hamline charges with running its Food Services) is a distributor of Starbucks products.(††) As students, faculty, and employees of Hamline, we must stand up together and say, “NO!” to allowing this tangled web of corporate connections to determine how things happen on our campus. Sign Hamline Socialist Alternative’s petition to the University Administration to stop undermining local businesses and to respect the consensus of the student body. Join us at our organizing meeting this ______________ at _______PM in Room ____ in the ______________ so we can decide how to move forward from here in making our voices heard!
