Keep Star Trek: Starfleet Academy cancelled
The Issue
Growing up, Star Trek was more than a TV show for me; it was a cherished tradition, a bonding experience with my family who introduced me to its inspiring universe of hope and possibilities. The world portrayed in the original Star Trek series and its successors was a beacon of a brighter future, where mankind collaborated to explore the cosmos. Where lessons of life were taught and learned. These stories were not just entertaining; they were uplifting, instilling a sense of optimism even in challenging times.
Fast forward to today, and franchising decisions have taken a turn that could overshadow this legacy. The premise of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has left many fans, myself included, with a sour taste. Not only does this series disrupt the legacy of hope built by its predecessors, but its premise is filled with darker themes that diverge from the Federation we grew to love.
The aged slapstick antics and the pedantic modern dialog inserted into the show age the show beyond its years. It appears neither to past fans (who find the drama and over the top gags to be distasteful), nor younger fans (who find the concept does not reflect them as people or the future they want). It tries to cross genres and fails in every regard.
While evolution in storytelling is essential, it should not come at the expense of the core ethics that Star Trek has instilled in its loyal fans over generations. We are not opposed to new narratives, but they must align with Star Trek's essence of hope, unity, and exploration—not a bleak portrayal of a destroyed galaxy that disheartens rather than inspires. We miss the stories of strong captains and strong leaders boldly exploring the unknown.
It is time to give the current Star Trek franchise era the rest it deserves and to preserve its legacy of optimism and unity for future generations. Let Starfleet Academy remain cancelled, making room for other narratives that uphold those traits which made Star Trek timeless.
Please sign this petition to voice our desire to preserve the hopeful legacy of Star Trek, ensuring its narratives continue to inspire rather than dampen our spirits. LLAP
