Keep St. Mark Church from Closing

Keep St. Mark Church from Closing
The Issue
St. Mark Church in Buffalo, New York has been a cornerstone of our community for over 100 years, providing not only spiritual guidance, but also support and fellowship to countless families who are members of the parish and school community.
On June 6, 2024, it was announced that nearly half of the 32 Catholic parishes in Buffalo will be merged into other parishes under a plan proposed by the Diocese of Buffalo. Officials advised that St. Mark, among 13 others, was to be closed as part of efforts to better align the properties of the Diocese with the shrinking population of Catholics and diminishing number of priests. Of those churches slated to close under the recommendations, St. Mark is the only North Buffalo church that is accompanied by a vibrant school community, with a robust enrollment. Nearly 400 children and their families, many of whom are actively engaged parishioners of St. Mark Church, will be directly impacted by the recommendation to close the church. The parish community extends beyond the walls of the church and halls of the school. It is intricately intertwined with the local community from which it draws additional support. Nearly every day of the week families gather onsite to worship, but also to celebrate their faith through participation in church meetings and social gatherings.
St. Mark Church is more than just a building. St. Mark School is more than just a school. Together, the St. Mark community is where grandparents watch their grandchildren share in the sacraments, education, and traditions that have bonded this community for over 100 years. It is where generations gather to celebrate life's milestones, find solace in times of sorrow, and engage in charitable activities that benefit the entire parish community, including the school and the neighborhood. It is not just a church and a school, it is our family. The potential closure of the church is devastating to those who rely on its presence for their spiritual and communal well-being. Moreover, many question the potential impact on our beloved school and the future of our community of Catholics.
Notwithstanding, St. Mark School will remain a beacon in North Buffalo. It will continue to provide students with a valued education steeped in the charism of the Catholic faith, for generations to come.
Life is difficult at times, and we all need prayer. In prayer, the depths of our spirit are in communion with the depths of the Spirit of God. Out of prayer can come instruction, guidance, healing, deliverance, and wisdom. Please join me in urging the Diocese to reconsider the closure of St. Mark Church so that it will remain open for future generations.
